Kim Hancock Swafford is a native of Alabama but has called Belgium and Texas home during different seasons of her life. Her fascination with clay happened in High School 50 years ago in an art class where she was handed a magazine ad on how to build a kickwheel. With a circular saw and a book about pottery throwing, she built her first wheel, trying to learn the art of throwing without much luck. Then in 1982, she joined a throwing class at the Birmingham Museum of Art.
This began her love of clay, setting aside different seasons of her life to learn about the art of clay. Since her retirement in 2022, she has devoted some of her time to the craft of clay. Her enjoyment and desire to continue to learn have only increased as she has journeyed through the world of ceramics.
